The Hawaiʻi State Public Charter School Commission (Commission) is the public state agency that authorizes charter schools in the state of Hawaiʻi. The Commission’s primary duty is to “authorize high quality public charter schools.” The Commission is committed to keeping the families of Kamalani Academy informed of the latest developments regarding the renewal of the school’s charter.
The Commission, at its General Business Meeting on Thursday, May 25, 2023, took action by voting to offer contract 4.0 to the Governing Board of Kamalani Academy Public Charter School with a term of two years beginning July 1, 2023 and running through June 30, 2025 with the following conditions:
- The Commission will conduct a reconstitution of the governing board as outlined in Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (HRS) §302D-17;
- Kamalani Academy will submit a baseline evaluation of the school director conducted by the reconstituted governing board with a report to the Commission on the result of the evaluation;
- Kamalani Academy will submit monthly financial reports; and
- Use the Contract frameworks monitoring tool to demonstrate evidence of a working effective student record keeping system.
The Kamalani Academy Governing Board signed this contract offer and the Commission has executed the contract. The Commission will begin the process of reconstituting the Governing Board by posting an application for prospective new Kamalani Academy governing board members. A detailed process and timeline will be posted on the Commission and school websites. During this process, Kamalani Academy’s current school operations will continue as usual. School administration and office staff will be available and you should expect no change in the day to day operations of Kamalani Academy. The Commission staff will work with Kamalani Academy's staff to ensure that preparations for the 2023-24 school year continue during the governing board reconstitution process.
